Tanvir Islam’s Stunning Five-Wicket Haul Revives Bangladesh’s Hopes in ODI Series
Tanvir Islam, in only his second One Day International, delivered a performance that not only turned the match on its head but also broke Bangladesh’s long-standing ODI losing streak. With figures of 5 wickets for 39 runs, Tanvir played a pivotal role in his team’s 16-run win over Sri Lanka in Colombo — their first win in the format after eight straight losses.

What makes his performance more admirable is the journey behind it. Coming into the match under pressure and after a rough start, Tanvir showed grit, skill, and composure — key traits of a quality bowler.
A Captain’s Faith, A Bowler’s Response
After conceding 22 runs in his first two overs, Tanvir admitted feeling unsettled. But it was the captain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who stood by him. “He told me not to bowl defensively, but to bowl like a wicket-taker,” Tanvir shared. “That confidence made the difference.”
Emboldened by his captain’s trust, he changed his approach and began hitting the right lengths. Soon, he dismissed Nissanka with a well-flighted delivery and removed Kusal Mendis in his next over, using DRS to full advantage.
From Setback to Stardom
Earlier this year, Tanvir had experimented with a new bowling action during the T20 series against UAE, which backfired. Dropped twice and overlooked during the Pakistan series, it seemed like his international career might stall before it began.

But advice from teammate Towhid Hridoy changed everything. “He told me, go back to what made you successful,” said Tanvir. “That old action was my identity.”
Since then, Tanvir has returned stronger, proving that skill and perseverance can overcome setbacks. Making his ODI debut at the age of 28, he stands as a testament to late bloomers in international cricket.
A Team Effort Backed by Key Performers
Mehidy also praised the collective effort, saying, “Tanvir was among four players who changed the game. He bowled brilliantly. Shamim kept things tight, and our lower order contributed crucial runs.”
The captain pointed out that although the team failed to bat through the full 50 overs in both games, they now have a solid foundation to build on for the series decider.
“We dropped catches and had costly run-outs, but this win gives us something to fight for. I hope we improve in key areas before the third ODI,” Mehidy added.
