Among the mourners was Asmahan Shaat, anguished by the loss of her 23-year-old son, Ahmed. He had left before dawn to collect rations at a GHF point in Rafah and never returned.

The ongoing Gaza No Food crisis has pushed desperate families to deadly aid sites under Israeli fire.

“Mom, I’m not going to die. I’ll bring you something from the aid centre,” Ahmed had vowed. Instead, he was struck in the abdomen as Israeli forces opened fire on civilians near the distribution site.

In the past month alone, 600 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 4,200 wounded, at GHF-run aid stations, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. What should have been lifelines for the desperate have instead become deadly choke-points.

Her husband had ventured out with great caution to avoid military vehicles, but they say that no one felt safe. According to his father, Youssef,

“He was gentle. He tried to feed his children. Now, they’ve weaponized our desperation.”
